Scholarships
The majority of scholarships offered by the College of Engineering have a financial need requirement. To be considered for most scholarship opportunities, make sure to submit your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) application on time.
Funds are awarded annually based on financial need and/or academic performance and are designed to be integrated into a student's total financial aid package.
Scholarship applications are open to UW-Seattle, undergraduate students.
The central scholarship office in the College of Engineering makes a small number of awards to incoming first-year ENGRUD students. Selection is based on a student's University admission application, and preference is given to students with financial need who are Washington state residents. No additional application is required.
If selected, the Office of Admissions will notify students in their UW admission materials. Most are two-year awards, renewable as long as students maintain full-time enrollment and make satisfactory academic progress toward a major in the College of Engineering. Students will receive a renewal notification email to their UW email address in the spring quarter. Students do not need to submit a scholarship application to have their award renewed.
Current ENGRUD students may be able to submit a scholarship application for the upcoming academic year to departments whose majors they plan to request placement. Students can contact advising staff in those departments before applying to learn more about the availability of scholarships. Scholarship offers from a department will be contingent on placement into that department's major. Junior and senior students are generally prioritized to receive departmental scholarships.
CEE, ECE, HCDE, ISE, MSE, and ME consider scholarship applications from transfer applicants who have applied or are planning to apply for admission to the major. All admitted transfer applicants who have submitted the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) are also encouraged to submit a scholarship application to the College of Engineering during the appropriate application time period.
Students already admitted to an engineering department should submit an application to their department.
International students who have been admitted to the UW are welcome to apply for scholarships. However, international students may not be eligible for some awards, as many scholarships have a financial need requirement (as determined by the FAFSA) and/or specify that the recipient must be a US resident or citizen. Additionally, most departments will only award students who are formally placed or admitted into their department.
Scholarship application due dates
Scholarship applications are accepted during these times:

Application process
- Check your department deadlines and initiate the online application. A UW NetID is required. Be prepared to enter your UW email address, proposed major, extracurricular activities, work experience, and a personal statement. Note that all communication about scholarship awards are sent electronically to your UW email address, so be sure to check it regularly.
- Complete the application by the deadline. An email confirming receipt of the scholarship application is sent to the applicant. Within about one month of the application deadline, the scholarship administrator notifies students of their status by email.
- Accept or decline any awards you are offered by returning to the online application.
- If you accept an award, please complete a student profile and submit a thank you letter to the donor.
- Typically, the College of Engineering hosts a Scholar Donor Recognition event in the fall. If the donors to your scholarship plan to attend, you will receive an invitation to the event.
- You do not need to select a specific scholarship during the application process. Scholarship administrators match recipients to scholarships.

Writing your personal statement
Your personal statement is extremely important. Start working on it early, and use it to tell your story and demonstrate why a scholarship award would make a difference in your education. Use examples about your community involvement and areas where you have displayed leadership qualities. Write about your special interests and skills, career plans, and future goals.
You can also include cultural and educational opportunities (or lack thereof), social and economic disadvantages that you may have had to overcome, and how these experiences shaped you.
Renewing and resubmitting applications
If you are currently receiving a departmental scholarship and would like to be considered for renewal, you need to reapply for the scholarship.
Students who received a College of Engineering scholarship upon admission to UW as an ENGRUD student do not need to reapply to have their scholarship renewed.
If you would like to be considered for a new award, you should resubmit your application during the period that the department accepts applications.
