Catalog Description:

The study of functions. This course is agateway to the study of higher level mathematics and a useful preparation forcourses with quantitative content. Students investigate the principles, properties, and applications of several common types of functions fromnumerical, algebraic, and graphical perspectives and use these functions tomodel real world problems. Principal types include polynomial, rational, composite and inverse functions. The course also introduces exponential andlogarithmic functions and briefly examines absolute value, root, step, andpiecewise functions. Students usegraphing calculators extensively.

Prerequisites: MAT 096 (formerly MAT 106); a score of 67 orhigher on the Arithmetic placement test and a score of 91 or higher on theAlgebra placement test; ENG 090 and ENG 094 (COL090), or satisfactory placementtest scores.

Student Learning Objectives:

Work collaboratively and independently as theyread, write, listen to, and speak mathematics.

1. Model real-world situations usingmathematics.

2. Engage in mathematical problemsolving.

3. Use appropriate tools (e.g. drawings, diagrams, charts, graphs, physical models, technology, manipulatives) toinvestigate, understand, and solve mathematical problems.

4. Develop the understanding that mathematicsis connected to other fields.

5. Expand their conceptual understandingof mathematics to the extent that they can answer questions asked in anunfamiliar format.

The additional student learning outcomes specific to MAT 107 are as follows and should be met in a mannerthat demonstrates conceptual understanding rather than rote learning:

1. Understand the concept of a functionand be comfortable using function notation and terminology in a variety ofsettings.

2. Be familiar with the graphs andproperties of a variety of common functions.

3. Develop the ability to relatedifferent representations (algebraic, graphical, numerical) of a function.

4. Develop the ability to model realsituations and data using functions.

5. Improve their algebraic manipulation, graphing, and problem-solving skills.

6. Learn to use technology to enhancetheir understanding of mathematical concepts.

CLASS EXPECTATION

I expect everyone to do the reading, watch videos and do the assignments as per given timeline. If you are havingdifficulties with the class please make use of the Math Studio or email me..

Whatto Expect:

This class will be runentirely online on Mymathlab. Every week you will beresponsible for watching video lectures, reading the text (hard copy or MyLabMath e-version),completing homework and quizzes (in MyLab Math),quizzes. Exams are scheduledat different points of the semester(not every week).Check the schedulebelow.Good time management is essential for success in anonline course. Work on your assignmentsevery day rather than leaving everything until the last minute.

Resources:

For most students, working alone with a textbook is not the mosteffective way to learn mathematics.Everyone should take advantage of some of these opportunities for extrahelp and support. They are designed to allow all students to have the type ofdiscussions that lead to learning math.

Me! I am happy to talk with youabout any questions or difficulties you have. Send me an email or talk with me to make an appointment. Themost effective way to communicate with me outside of class is through email.

Resources:

Instructor – Email me anytime! I check email several times per day andyou can generally expect a response within 24 hours.

The math studio – Call the college to find their hours(because ofCovid)

The accesscode comes with the book from the book store or it comes alone. If you don’t have money to buy an access code at present, you can get a temporary one as soon as you register on mymathlab( Way down thepage after you create an account it will ask if you are waiting for financialaid).Note this is good for only 14 days or so. After that you will need to buya new code. You will not loose your work.In other words there is no reason foranyone to miss assignments. Make sure you do them in advance to avoidany computer problems at the lastminute. Avoid the excuse “my computer froze” “I had a blackout”etc.Incase you disagree with a particularanswer from mystatlab, you need to let me know. àYou only have single attempt for exams

à Like the Quiz, youdont do submit after doing one question. If you do that, it will onlygive you credit for the one question and 0 for everything else.

On thedays that exams are scheduled, there will be no homework and quizzes due

àLastly the exam is TIMED andonce you open it, you must go ahead and finish it up. You cant open and notstart it.DO SUBMIT ONLY AFTER FINISHING THE ENTIRE TEST

Academic Honesty:

The faculty and staff at Greenfield CommunityCollege expect academic honesty. Whileyou are encouraged to seek help if you have questions on homework assignments, you should not represent others’ work as your own. Likewise, your work on quizzes and exams mustbe your own. Projects must includeappropriate citations. Depending onseverity, cheating (including plagiarism) may result in a reduction in yourgrade or in failing the course entirely.

Conduct:

Conduct by any student thatis disruptive to learning may result in a warning. Repeated warnings may result in temporary orpermanent dismissal from the class. Please take care to communicate with instructors and other students in arespectful manner.

Lastly you can monitor your average on the lefthand corner of mymathlab.Note that this average is based on assignment you are supposedto do.If you miss anything, the average you see WILL NOT be the actualaverage( it will be an average based on whatyou have done and not whatyou were supposedto do). If youdon’t miss anything, the average should be the same. If you miss anything, expect the average grade to drop at the end of the semester when the computerzeros all the missed assignments.
